Martial Art Classes for Self Defense

by Urb@nComb@t

What is the best martial art for self defense? This is a hot debate, one which invokes passionate opinions from martial artists all around the world. There are literally thousands of martial artstyles, systems and philosophies. But are they all great? Not likely.

While some styles may provide small self defense benefits, the reality is that the majority of them are not practicaland don’t translate to today’s current society whatsoever. But why is this? After all, “martial” literally means: relating to or suited for a war. Therefore if an art or style isn’t suited for combat or fit to be effective in handling real violence, well then it really isn’t “martial” at all.

So why do we see so many martial arts in America and around the globe claiming to be effective in self defense? The answer is simple: it’s about money. It’s about deception. There are many reasons why people get into martial arts: fitness, discipline, competition, interest in the art, learning something new, confidence, sense of community and of course, self defense. These are all great reasons and each person should follow his or her own motives. But many schools and organizations will often sell you whatever aspect you are searching for, even if their style truly isn’t suited to effectively provide that aspect. What does this mean? It means most styles are selling fake self defense. Don’t be fooled!

So if you are looking for the best martial art for self defense, firstly be sure to narrow down your choices to arts that are PURELY for self defense and not just PARTLY for self defense. Any practice time devoted to developing impractical skills is completely impractical practice time. It’s as simple as that.

Ladies, this applies to you as well, perhaps even more so! If you’re looking for self defense classes for women or children, then be sure to stay away from the fancy, high-flying garbage you see in every shopping center. Self defense is no joke. If you want street-practical martial arts in America or anywhere else in the world, stick to one rule: more roots, less flowers. Flowers are pretty and they may catch the eye, but the roots, or core effective skills, are what will give you an upper hand against a violent attacker in a real-world scenario.

At ICE Martial Arts we’re all about the roots. In fact, our entire system is rooted in proven elements such as efficiency, directness, simplicity and much more. These elements are specifically designed to give you the clear ADVANTAGE against your attacker.
